Useful Tips
Scenic drives - by Fatima from Durban
Driving from Larnaca the main road was good, the villages of Kato Lefkara and Pano Lefkara are quite picturesque with lemon, fig, and olive trees growing on the hills. The Troodos Mountains are beautiful and the salt lake with all those flamingo was quite a sight to see.

When you come up to a roundabout, please give way to the vehicle that's on the right. as no one does this in cyprus.

At the beginning of the season the police are not to bad but by the end of the summer they are getting p***ed off with the people on their rental mopeds without helmits, speeding etc cos so many keep having accidents. So just be carefull in late summer.

We used the local bus & also hired a car for a week, which you really need to do to explore the Troodos Mountains properly. It's easy to hire cars and bikes all over the country.

Keep your eyes on the erratic very slow taxi drivers, when cruising for fares they loose the abillity to see other transport

I was happy to discover that one can leave the beach in the blazing sun and take a drive up the mountain where i could see snow, just remember to bring your jacket and gloves

The best way to see Cyprus is by car, no doubt about it, but there are a few things one should know before hand. For instance, they use right-hand-drive vehicles and drive on the left side of the road . Very confusing at first. Make sure you obey the rules, the cops like to hand out fines here, trust me....

All Cypriot drivers treat traffic lights just as an indication - red means stop if you feel like it! So watch out at the big junctions.

Cyprus Overview
This Mediterranean island has incredible diversity as a result of almost constant invasion throughout its history. Today this diversity has developed to such an extent that Cyprus is essentially two separate countries. In the south of the Island there is the Greek influenced Republic, where as North Cyprus has a strong Turkish influence.

The main draw of Cyprus are the fantastic beach resorts, which attract many tourists every year. Away from the major resorts there is some incredible culture and a range terrain and countryside.

Cyprus Essentials
Lefkosia – Divided by the green line which separates the north and the south, Lefkosia is the capital of Cyprus and is found in the centre of the island. The capital is much less tourist focused than the coastal resorts and has some magnificent sights and interesting cultural attractions.

Troödos Massif – This mountainous area is situated in the South of Island. Troödos Massif is fantastic for skiing and hiking and offers a complete contrasts in scenery, temperature and atmosphere to the Republic’s coastal resorts.

Pafos – This resort is situated on the western coast of the Island. Magnificent beaches and great weather are its major draw. Pafos mainly caters for package holiday visitors. Nevertheless, in and around Pafos there are some fantastic attractions such as the Tombs of the Kings.

Kyrenia – A fantastic beach resort on the northern coast of the Island. If you want to take a short break away from the sun, sea and sand then visit the excellent Kyrenia Castle.

Ayia Napa – One of Europe’s premier resorts for clubbers, Ayia Napa is becoming more and more popular with young party seekers. The capital of garage music in Europe attracts top DJ’s throughout the summer months.

Cyprus Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events
Kataklysmos (16th June) – This Christian festival of food is celebrated all over the island, but the best place to be is Larnaca which has fairs and water sports on the promenade.

Cyprus Music Days at the Kourion(June/July) – Classical and Jazz musicians from all over the world gather to perform with the sensational ancient Kourion Theatre as a backdrop.
